Sydney Airport Master Plan 2009

Sydney Airport's existing Master Plan 03/04 was approved by the Australian Government in 2004 following consultation with the community and other key stakeholders. We are now five years into the 20 year planning period for this plan. As required by the Airports Act 1996, Sydney Airport is updating the existing plan.

The updated Master Plan 2009 will provide Sydney Airport's vision for the operation and development of Australia's premier airport to the year 2029 and the strategies required to sustainably meet Sydney's future air transport needs.

Sydney Airport has prepared a Preliminary Draft Master Plan 2009 (PDMP), which is now on display for public comment until 16 December 2008. Importantly, the PDMP is based on:

  • No changes to the curfew.
  • No changes to aircraft flight paths.
  • No changes to the aircraft movement cap.
  • No new runways.
  • No change to access arrangements for regional airlines.

The PDMP demonstrates that Sydney Airport can accommodate forecast growth in airline travel because:

  • airport facilities - including terminals, hangars, freight facilities, aircraft parking, airport roads and car parking - are proposed to be progressively upgraded over the next 20 years.
  • aviation technology is improving all the time: the new generation aircraft are quieter, cleaner, more efficient and they consume less fuel.
  • upgrades to the M4 and M5 motorways, along with new bus services and more frequent trains are also being considered by Governments.  New infrastructure and public transport services will alleviate congestion, making it easier for people to travel to and from Sydney Airport.

The PDMP shows that the airport has a strong future and will continue to make a vital social and economic contribution to Sydney and NSW.

What work has been undertaken since the existing Master Plan 03/04 was approved ?

Since Sydney Airport's existing Master Plan 03/04 was approved by the Australian Government in 2004, a number of development projects and other environmental initiatives have been or are being implemented at Sydney Airport. These include:

  • The $500 million upgrade and expansion of the International terminal (T1) is underway.
  • The new $65 million car park - providing 3,000 undercover spaces - has opened at T1.
  • Over $40 million has been invested to improve and update the common-user Domestic terminal (T2).
  • Sydney Airport has spent $90 million to improve passenger safety and security by providing 100% checked bag screening at T1 and T2.
  • Water recycling at Sydney Airport is being expanded.
  • Sydney Airport is ensuring it is ready for the new generation of quieter, cleaner and more fuel efficient aircraft.
  • Building a safer airport: five new runway end safety areas have been completed, with construction on the sixth and final one due to commence in mid-October 2008.
