SYDNEY AIRPORT Environment Strategy 2010 - 2015

Sydney Airport publicly exhibited a Preliminary Draft Environment Strategy 2010 – 2015 (PDES) for 60 business days between 7 August 2009 and 2 November 2009. The public exhibition period has now concluded.

The PDES updates and replaces Sydney Airport’s existing Environment Strategy, which covered the period 2005 - 2010. Many projects and initiatives in the existing Strategy have already been implemented or are underway, including:

  •    construction of the water recycling plant at the International Terminal;
  •    measures to boost recycling and reduce waste;
  •    increased use of fixed electrical ground power units to reduce fuel burn, air pollution and carbon emissions; 
  •    implementation of the NSW Government endorsed Energy and Water Savings Action Plans;
  •    preparation of the Sydney Airport Ground Travel Plan;
  •    substantial tree plantings; and
  •    the release of native fish into the Sydney Airport Wetlands and measures to better control pests.

The PDES details Sydney Airport’s environmental objectives and commitments for the next five years, builds on the above environmental achievements made over the previous five years and promotes the continual improvement of environmental management at Sydney Airport. Please note that noise and emissions from aircraft in flight are issues which are addressed in the Master Plan 2009 and by relevant Australian Government legislation, rather than the Environment Strategy.

An extensive community and stakeholder consultation process was undertaken, which built on that undertaken during the preparation of the PDES.

Sydney Airport Corporation Limited will give due regard to all comments received during the public exhibition period before submitting a Draft Environment Strategy (DES) to the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government for his consideration.

SYDNEY AIRPORT'S EXISTING ENVIRONMENT STRATEGY 2005 - 2010

The PDES 2010 - 2015 updates Sydney Airport’s existing Environment Strategy 2005 - 2010. The existing Environment Strategy 2005 - 2010 will remain in force until it is replaced by the new Environment Strategy 2010 - 2015.
