Security Information for Passengers

Sydney Airport takes security very seriously and meets all the government's requirements.  Each year Sydney Airport Corporation spends around $28 million on security and will spend a further $2.8 million upgrading the network of surveillance cameras.  In addition to this, a further $70 million will be spent implementing in-line checked bag screening for bags going through the international terminal.

Does Sydney Airport offer a shrink wrap service?

SACL has committed to the introduction of a shrink wrap facility at Sydney Airport.  Currently, we are working through the logistics of the systems implementation, and aim to have it available in the near future.

Will all passengers have their bags shrink wrapped once the system is available?

Once introduced, shrink wrapping will not be compulsory.  Passengers will have the choice of whether to take advantage of the service or not.

Why is shrink wrapping available in some ports but not in Sydney?

Baggage handling systems can be complex, and introducing any new system to integrate can be challenging.  We are committed to providing access for passengers to shrink wrapping, and are in the process of expediting its implementation. 

We can assure you that Sydney Airport screens 100% of checked baggage via a combination of in-line (automated) and explosive trace detection (ETD) – a method approved by the Federal Government.

Is Sydney Airport exploring any other additional bag security measures?

Yes.  We have provided a "bag strapping" service.  In this instance, a disposable strap is placed around the passengers bag.  

Is there anything I can do to in the interim?

Yes.  Sydney Airport recommends that passengers lock their bags when travelling.  Additionally, we advise passengers to keep their belongings with them at all times when in the terminal.
