Strong Focus on Security

Safety and security throughout the airport precinct is afforded the highest of priorities. Government regulated security requirements are a key focus of Sydney Airport. Front line security roles are primarily performed by contracted specialist security firms, with Sydney Airport maintaining a strong policy, management and coordination role.

Passenger screening at Sydney Airport operated terminals is performed to Australian Government standards using x-ray machines, walk through metal detectors and hand held metal detectors. Explosive trace detection systems were introduced at the passenger screening point in October 2003, with random screening of passengers and carry on goods.

Checked Bag Screening is an increasing focus of the Australian Government and Sydney Airport manages and operates the assets that deliver this services, including in-line x-ray units and conveyor systems. Sydney Airport is working with Government to achieve new mandates for international and domestic baggage screening.  All baggage bound for international destinations undergo the Checked Baggage Screening process through Explosive Detection System (EDS) capable x-ray equipment.

Sydney Airport has an access control system with an extensive network of closed circuit TV cameras which operate 24 hours a day. Sydney Airport has constant security patrols and we work closley with the Australian Federal Police to deliver Government regulated uniformed security force deterrent patrols and a first response capability. This includes specialist mobile, foot and bike patrols along with technical support from bomb appraisal teams and explosive detection dogs, all of which provide an intelligence driven, proactive and flexible security presence.

In addition, Avaition Security Identification cards used at airports are used to identify a person who has been the subject of a background check.  ASICs are another layer of security that ensures that only people who have been bacground checked to a certain level are permitted to be in the secure areas of airports.  The ASIC scheme aims to reduce the rick of unlawful interference with aviation, not just terrorism.

An in-house team of security specialists provide advice and guidance on risk management and policy standards to meet Government mandates and corporate requirements. Audits and system testing takes place regularly to ensure achievement of security outcomes.

The Aviation Transport Security Act 2004 provides legislative framework for aviation security.   Sydney Airport is heavily engaged in discussions with the Government on the implementation of the associated Aviation Transport Security Regulations and revised Transport Security Programs.  Combined, these initiatives are designed to provide an additional layer of security to the multi-layer security approach sought by Sydney Airport.  We continually seek to deliver enhanced aviation security outcomes and to be more flexible to meet contemporary threats.
