Baggage Security - Information for Travellers

Security for passengers and staff is a top priority and Sydney Airport has spent $90 million to provide 100% checked bag screening.

The security screening allows automated x-ray scanning of checked passenger baggage to prevent explosives from being loaded into the hold of planes.  The system includes in-line x-ray units and conveyors.  It is designed to screen thousands of bags every hour to make sure that there are no delays to passengers or flights.

A further $2.8 million has been invested to upgrade the network of surveillance cameras that operate at Sydney Airport.

Sydney Airport recommends passengers lock their bags when travelling. Additionally, we advise passengers to keep their belongings with them at all times when in the terminal.

Sydney Airport works closely with the Australian Government's security agencies.

Personal Bag Security - Bag Strapping

Sydney Airport Corporation Ltd (SACL) provides an optional baggage protection service, in the form of secure strapping, to provide additional security for passengers travelling overseas.  Straps are heat sealed and are applied by a machine so that any interference with the bag can be easily detected.

This service, Smartstrap, is operated by SmartCarte and is available in the International Terminal (T1) on the departures level between Check-in Counters D and E and on the arrivals level at SmartCarte Baggage, next to McDonalds.  A small fee is charged per item.

A Shrink Wrapping service is not provided at Sydney Airport.
