Frequently Asked Questions
What computer hardware do I require, and where can I get it?
You require a Wireless LAN access device (IEEE802.11b standard) to use the Sydney Airport Wireless Hotspot service. In most cases, this will be a PCMCIA Wireless LAN card which you simply attach to your laptop on entering the airport Wireless Hotspot. Alternatively, some of the newer laptops are sold with Wireless LAN capabilities built in. Consult your local computer dealer for a WiFi capable device.
What data transfer speed will I get?
Wireless LAN or IEEE802.11b technology supports a maximum data speed of up to 11Mb/s. The actual data speed experienced will depend on coverage, location, capacity and internet backhaul connection.
Can I use 802.11g or 802.11a
The Hotspot Service at Sydney Airport supports the 802.11b standard. Some parts of the terminal will offer 802.11g, however this is limited. No support is provided for 802.11a or for any of the proprietary speed enhancement mechanisms.
What is WLAN?
WLAN is a technology which allows you to connect to the Internet wirelessly (ie: without physically connecting a phone line to your laptop or PDA). This is done using WLAN equipment compliant with the IEEE802.11b standard.
I still cannot get a connection. Where can I get more help?
If you have enabled your wireless card, and set up your computer appropriately and you still cannot connect you may try listening to the recorded voice message which will talk you through the setup of your computer. This service is available on +61 2 9667 9747.
If you are a registered Optus or Telstra customer, then you may contact the customer support centre at your provider on the numbers shown above.
