• Pinch points strategy and funding will improve traffic flow
• Review of operational regulations would enhance NSW’s competitiveness
Today’s NSW Government Long Term Transport Master Plan and State Infrastructure Strategy sets out a sensible short- and long-term road map for improving access to the Sydney Airport and Port Botany precinct.
“Some people’s perception that Sydney Airport is at capacity is based on the issues around getting to the airport, so we strongly support the $300 million of short-term measures to improve road access to the airport,” Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said.
“The plans for the Sydney Airport-Port Botany precinct, including the Mill Pond Road widening and turning O’Riordan Street and Bourke Road into one-way pairs will have a positive impact on traffic flow to and around the airport. Sydney Airport has been working closely with the NSW Government and these announcements will also enhance Sydney Airport’s ability to improve ground transport within the airport boundary.
“Further measures such as introducing more public bus services and reducing the train fare would encourage more people to catch public transport to the airport and take pressure off the road network.
“These initiatives in the wider transport networks will significantly support the more than $2 billion that we have recently invested in capacity additions and upgrades at Sydney Airport.
“More efficient utilisation of the airport – the state’s biggest infrastructure asset – is entirely logical, taking into account the technological advances in aviation in recent decades.
“The NSW Government has taken a responsible approach to efficiently use the existing infrastructure before spending scarce state and federal capital on a new airport, consistent with the recommendations of the recent Joint Study into Aviation Capacity in the Sydney Region.
“Sydney Airport also supports the objectives of the operational regulations, including continued access for regional communities and noise management.
“Nevertheless, enhancements to the operational regulations such as those proposed by the NSW Government would, amongst other things, improve NSW’s global competitiveness and stimulate the growth of regional travel and tourism. The existing regulations don’t reflect the rapid changes in aviation technology and substantially quieter aircraft.
“The timely finalisation of the NSW Government’s package of initiatives to support the growth of Sydney Airport will materially assist Sydney Airport in the preparation of our new master plan.”
