• Sydney Airport donates $28,250 to The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal
• Passengers can also donate to the Red Shield Appeal at the airport this week

Sydney Airport has provided an early boost to this year’s Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal with a donation for $28,250.

“Strengthening our community ties is a top priority for Sydney Airport and The Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal provides vital funding to community programs throughout the year,” Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said.

“Sydney Airport works closely with The Salvation Army, who provide important services to our staff and passengers, including on-call support for emergencies and the chaplaincy program.

“This donation of $28,250 will make a real difference, going directly towards helping Australians in need by maintaining community services.

“I encourage Sydney Airport’s staff and passengers to also consider donating to The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal via our two donation collection points at the international and domestic terminals.

“Volunteers at T1, T2 and T3 will be collecting donations every day from 6am to 6pm until the appeal closes on Sunday, 26 May.”

Ms Mather presented Salvation Army chaplain coordinator Joanne Slater with the donation at the departures area in Sydney Airport’s international terminal T1 this morning.

Salvation Army spokesperson Major Peter Sutcliffe said it was vital that The Salvation Army reach its national fundraising goal of $79.5 million so it can continue to assist those most in need.

“The Salvation Army helps more than one million Australians every year by providing timely and practical assistance in emergencies, as well as valuable community services including aged care, crisis accommodation, English classes and professional counselling.

“In a typical week, we provide 100,000 meals, 2,000 beds and up to 8,000 food vouchers to cover basic needs for people struggling to make ends meet.”

The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army’s annual fundraising appeal and will be held this year on 25-26 May.
