First sod turned today
Work has started on building a new $68 million four-star Rydges hotel at Sydney Airport's International terminal, with the first sod turned by NSW Tourism Minister George Souris in a ground-breaking ceremony today.
"This hotel meets demand by international tourists as well as business travellers for convenient accommodation at Sydney Airport and we're looking forward to Rydges opening for business in 2013," Sydney Airport chief executive Kerrie Mather said.
"Sydney Airport will be welcoming two new international airlines - Air Asia X and Scoot - later this year and a new hotel at the International terminal enhances Sydney as a premier destination for inbound travel.
"Under a partnership with Destination NSW, we are working more closely with government than ever before to grow tourism in NSW. Everything we do to improve and enhance services at Sydney Airport adds to this goal.
"Sydney Airport is Australia's international gateway and having a hotel within walking distance is good news for business travellers and tourists alike.
Construction of the new project by the Denwol Group was announced in November.
"Last year, more than 11.6 million passengers flew to and from Sydney Airport's International terminal, an increase of 3 per cent on the previous year and Rydges will be well-placed to cater to this growth," Ms Mather said.
