Sydney Airport staff have presented $24,300 to St George Hospital for its new Emergency Department, with funds raised through a special fundraising event supported by the airport community.

Sydney Airport‟s Aerobilling Analyst, Linda Lavorato, and Senior Financial Accountant, Wayde Harnett, who organised the event together, presented the cheque for $24,300 to St George Hospital on Thursday, 5 September.

“The word "cheerity" describes that awesome feeling you get from the goodness of giving,” Ms Lavorato said.

“St George Hospital is currently building a new Emergency Department so this was a great opportunity for us to support the lifesaving work they do with funds for new equipment.”

Mr Harnett said Sydney Airport donated $15,000 to the cause, in addition to the money raised through the charity masquerade ball and other donations.

“We’d like to thank the airport community for supporting this event, including Sydney Airport for its generous donation, the new Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel for providing the fantastic venue, and airlines, Sydney Airport retailers and small businesses in the local community for their contribution,” Mr Harnett said.

Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer, Kerrie Mather, said the airport was pleased to support St George Hospital as it has great synergies with the airport community and is a vital service providing first response to the airport precinct.

“We’re very proud of our hardworking and generous staff who have donated their own time to organise the entire charity event. We were pleased that we could support their worthy initiative with our donation,” Ms Mather said.

“Sydney Airport delivers hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in grants and sponsorships to community and sporting clubs, local schools, charities and other organisations such as St George Hospital as part of the ongoing support we provide to our local community.”

The "Cheerity" masquerade ball was held on Friday, 30 August at the rooftop function centre of Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel, a major supporter of the event, and was attended by Sydney Airport staff, family and friends, as well as St George Hospital Director of Emergency, Dr Trevor Chan.

The event featured a live band, Doctors Rocksters; a live auction of sports memorabilia, including a Don Bradman Invincibles bat and signed rugby league jerseys; a silent auction for prizes including a $500 Flight Centre voucher; and a lucky door prize of two return tickets to Auckland with limousine transfers donated by Emirates and Unity Resources.
