Preparing for your visit to Sydney Airport

  • Use our Pre-flight check list to assist you in preparing for your international flight before you get to Sydney Airport.
  • Contact your airlines in advance if you require special assistance and also check out our Special assistance section.
  • Visit the Information for travellers page of the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service website.
  • Download the ’Know Before You Go’ guide for travellers from the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service website.
  • Check the security regulations in relation to what you can and cannot take through the security screening point and onto an aircraft, including prohibited items and dangerous goods.
  • Be aware of the quantity limits for liquids, aerosols and gels passengers may take onboard the aircraft with them, and specific rules around duty free liquid, aerosol or gel items.
  • Do not make jokes about bombs or make security threats. This is a criminal offence and the police may be called. As a consequence you might miss your flight or your airline may not allow you to board your flight.
  • Don’t leave baggage unattended at any time as it will be treated as suspicious and taken away.
  • Do not exceed your airline’s designated baggage allowances.

Arriving at Sydney Airport

  • If you have any questions when you are at the terminal, please approach one of our Gold Ambassador volunteers who wear bright gold jackets.

If you are travelling with children:

  • Parents’ rooms are located throughout the terminal, both before and after Customs.
  • Children’s play areas are located between check-in counters A and B and near check-in counter J.
     

Checking in for your flight

  • Locate your check-in counter using the flight information display screens.
  • Check your ticket confirmation for airline’s check-in times.
  • Some airlines allow you to check-in online. For further details contact your airline.
  • Have all tickets and passports ready.
  • Use the flight information display screens located throughout the terminal for latest flight information updates.
     

If you are travelling with children:

  • Some airlines provide strollers for use inside the terminal after Customs and Border Protection. Check with your airline if it offers this service.
  • Pick up a copy of the T1 Airport Guide for a map of the terminal and great shopping and eating offers.

Clearing customs and border protection

  • An outgoing passenger card must be completed for all passengers in your group, including one for each child.
  • A passport, completed outgoing passenger card and boarding pass must be presented for each passenger in your group.
  • Download the ’Know Before You Go’ guide for travellers from the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service website.
  • Visit the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service website for more customs-related information for travellers.
  • To claim a tax refund on certain goods purchased in Australia, visit the Tourist Refund Office or visit our Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) page. The TRS office is located just after Customs and Border Protection in the Duty Free Store.

If you are travelling with children:


Relaxing before your flight

  • There are a large range of shops and eating and drinking options after you clear security screening.
  • Purchase books, magazines, snacks and drinks to take on board your flight.
  • It is only a 10 minute walk at most to any gate.
  • All duty free purchases must be finalised 20 minutes before your flight departs.
  • You can change currency at Travelex counters and multi-currency ATMs.

  • Visit our Eating & Drinking page to find a place to enjoy a delicious meal or light refreshment before boarding your flight.

If you are travelling with children:

  • There are children’s play areas between gates 31 and 33 and between gates 58 and 59.
  • There is a kids cinema at Viaggio Espresso and Bar near gate 34.
     

Boarding your flight

  • Have your boarding pass ready.
  • Be at the boarding gate by the time designated by your airline.
  • Keep an eye on the flight information screens throughout the terminal for flight status updates.
  • For US-bound flights you may be required to undergo secondary screening measures at your departure gate.
  • No hot drinks are permitted upon boarding.
