Sydney Airport supports largest English lesson in the world
  • Sydney Airport promotes Sydney as a leading education destination and supports education tourism growth through new partnership with English Australia
  • Education is NSW’s largest service export, with the highest number of international enrolments in Australia

Sydney Airport has partnered with English Australia for the largest English lesson in the world, Biggest English 2016, to be held at 4pm today at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach.

The first event of its kind in NSW promotes the state as a destination for international students, with 3,000 students expected to attend.

“As the gateway to Australia, we’re pleased to support this unique initiative to grow education tourism,” Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sydney Airport Kerrie Mather said.

“We’re proud to support organisations such as English Australia to promote Sydney as a leading education destination for international students.

“We have a strong partnership with Study NSW, including the popular NSW International Student Welcome Desk in our T1 International terminal, to ensure students have a positive first impression of Sydney when they arrive in Australia.

“International education generated over $6.7 billion in export revenue for NSW in 2014/2015 and with every 10 international students, three family members and two friends visit from abroad each year.

“This new partnership with English Australia further strengthens our support of this important market.”

The English Australia campaign aims to set an official Guinness World Record for the largest English lesson, and promote Sydney and Australia as a top international destination for study and travel.

“Sydney Airport is often the first port of call for international students studying in Australia – and for this reason, this partnership is vitally important. It sends a strong message that these students are not only welcome in Australia, but their contribution while living in Australia is greatly appreciated,” Project Manager of Biggest English Priscila Duarte said.

Sydney Airport also supports education through its scholarship program with Western Sydney University, funding three future tourism leaders with $7,500 per year for the duration of their Bachelor of Tourism Management degree.
