- Sydney Airport increases investment to fund Nippers and Life Savers at local beaches
- One of Surf Life Saving Sydney’s longest running partnerships
- Sydney Airport proudly supports the local community
Sydney Airport has strengthened its 17-year partnership with Surf Life Saving Sydney (SLS Sydney), increasing its investment in the community organisation to help deliver important training, education, skills building and support programs for young Nippers and Surf Life Savers in Sydney.
The major partnership was officially relaunched at an event yesterday at South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club, featuring patrol briefing, tubes rescue, CPR training and junior development activities.
Sydney Airport General Manager Corporate Affairs Sally Fielke said she was proud that SLS Sydney is one of the airport’s most enduring partnerships.
“We’re thrilled to reinforce and renew our partnership with SLS Sydney as we help to make our beaches safe ahead of the busy summer holiday season,” Ms Fielke said.
“Over the 17 years we’ve partnered with SLS Sydney, our support has focused on the training and development of Nippers to ensure they have the experience and confidence they need. We’re expanding our engagement to include the Patrolling Surf Life Savers on the beach, as well as our continued support of the Sydney Juniors.
“It’s a fitting partnership, not only because many travellers visit Sydney for our beautiful beaches, but also because safety is core to what we both do.”
SLS Sydney President George Shales said the long-term partnership with Sydney Airport positively impacts on the future of the 15 Surf Life Saving Clubs in the Sydney Branch.
“As one of Australia's leading Surf Life Saving Branches, we have a major role in ensuring our Surf Life Savers are highly trained, skilled and supported by up to date resources. This renewed and important partnership with Sydney Airport will certainly give us the funds to achieve our goals in this area,” Mr Shales said.
SLS Sydney Director of Junior Development Doug Hawkins added, “Having Sydney Airport as our major sponsor for the last 16 seasons has allowed us to develop thousands of young Nippers through our Development Programs, and deliver the second largest Nipper carnival in Australia every season. Last season saw 1,400 Nippers attend, supported by 300 specialist SLS Sydney Volunteers.”
Sydney Airport has a community investment strategy which includes supporting thriving and healthy local communities. The airport encourages its 29,000-strong airport community, many of whom live locally, to live the airport’s safety values and ensure the health and wellbeing of themselves and those around us.
SLS Sydney has some of the largest Surf Clubs in Australia, covering 15 beaches along the east coast from North Bondi to as far south as Burning Palms in the Royal National Park. It supports over 6,200 Juniors and 4,400 Active Patrolling Members through patrols, development, surf sports and education.
