Sydney Airport is inviting the community to take part in its third annual Runway Run when it kicks off its 2017 Community Christmas Giving Appeal on Sunday, 12 November.

Sydney Airport Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said the event was a unique chance to set foot on the airfield of Australia’s busiest airport, all in the name of a good cause. “Our Runway Run has fast become an iconic event for aviation and fitness enthusiasts alike,” Ms Mather said.

“This year the event will support Cure Cancer Australia with participants to race in a red BARBECURE apron and Santa hat – bringing colour, frivolity and a touch of the Christmas spirit to the airfield.

“This is a fun and light-hearted way to start our Christmas Appeal, which brings our airport community together to raise funds and awareness for a good cause.”

Only 100 tickets are available for participation in this one-of-a-kind event, which will see runners race 500 metres down one of Sydney Airport’s runways. Tickets are $150, with all proceeds to be donated to Cure Cancer Australia. The ticket price includes a Cure Cancer Australia BARBECURE apron and Santa hat, parking at Blu Emu Car Park and the chance to vie for the prestigious title of the 2017 Runway Run Champion.

“We are incredibly excited to launch our Community Christmas Giving Appeal partnership with Sydney Airport at this year’s Runway Run,” CEO of Cure Cancer Australia Floyd Larsen said.

“This event is a unique experience for runners of all ages and abilities, and a fantastic opportunity for fundraisers to support Cure Cancer Australia.

“We’re adding some fun to the proceedings by providing all participants with a branded Cure Cancer Australia BARBECURE apron and Santa hat, and we hope that runners will use this opportunity to raise much-needed funds to support early-career cancer researchers.”

Participants will need to arrive at 9am on Sunday, 12 November to prepare for the big race at 10am. To book, go to www.curecancer.com.au/sydney-airport-runway-run

The event will officially launch the 2017 Sydney Airport Community Christmas Giving Appeal which runs throughout November and December. The annual appeal includes festive events and activities across the airport’s terminals to help raise funds towards finding a cure for cancer.

All funds raised by this year’s Christmas appeal will go to Cure Cancer Australia, supporting Australia’s brightest early-career scientists working across all areas of cancer research and all cancer types.

The Sydney Airport Community Christmas Giving Appeal has raised more than $1 million for charity since it began in 2012, including a record $316,000 last year. It forms part of Sydney Airport’s community investment strategy, which seeks to contribute to and enrich the communities surrounding the airport.
