Sydney Airport’s Master Plan 2045 sets out the strategic direction for the development of the airport over the next 20 years. It was prepared following comprehensive engagement and consultation with airlines, other members of the aviation industry, Australian and NSW Government agencies, local government, the tourism industry, the business sector and the local community.
Sydney Airport is a vital infrastructure asset that generates more than $45 billion in economic activity every year for NSW and Australia, which is forecast to increase to $70.6 billion by 2045. It also generates or facilitates more than 35,000 jobs at the airport and 354,800 full-time equivalent jobs across NSW and Australia. These are forecast to increase to 44,500 and 559,000 jobs by 2045.
Master Plan 2045 acknowledges that continued growth of Sydney Airport is crucial to achieving our local, state and national employment, tourism and development objectives. Some of the key features of Master Plan 2045 include:
- How we will accommodate the forecast increase in passenger numbers to 72.6 million over the 20-year planning period
- Our approach to incorporate sustainability into the planning and design for future Sydney Airport expansion
- Sydney Airport's strategy to work with key stakeholders to better manage the impact of aircraft noise
- How we will maintain our focus on safety and security, enhance the capacity and efficiency of the airport, and deliver continually improving outcomes for our passengers
- Our plan to respond quickly to economic or aviation industry change
- Details of our proposed improvements to the airfield, aviation facilities, terminals and infrastructure
- How we are improving road network performance in and around Sydney Airport in our Five-Year Ground Transport Plan and 20-Year Ground Transport Strategy
- How the Five-Year Environment Strategy will enhance sustainability of airport operations, emphasise our commitment to reducing emissions, ensure it is resilient to climate change and conserve significant items of natural, Indigenous or heritage value
Master Plan 2045 includes an Australian Noise Exposure Forecast for 2045 (ANEF 2045), as shown in Chapter 15 (Map 15-1) and Appendix H (Map H-1) which was endorsed for technical accuracy by Airservices Australia on 26 February 2026.
