Philippines Philippines

This October marks a special milestone as Philippine Airlines celebrates 60 years of flying between Australia and the Philippines. From Sydney, travellers can fly direct to Manila, the country's bustling capital and main international hub, and from there connect to more than 30 destinations across the archipelago. Think lush jungles, white sand beaches, world-class dive spots, and cultural treasures, all just a short flight away.

The journey begins the moment you step on board. Philippine Airlines operates the Airbus A330-300, featuring lie-flat seats in Business Class, extra legroom in Premium Economy, and the warm hospitality Filipinos are famous for.

What to See & Do in the Philippines

Manila: The Heart of the Philippines

Manila is the kind of city that never sits still. By day, you can wander the cobblestoned streets of Intramuros Old Town, step inside centuries-old churches, take in a piece of history at Rizal Park, or explore Fort Santiago, one of the country's oldest Hispanic stone castles.

Hop on a brightly coloured jeepney, the city's iconic form of transport, or enjoy a stroll along the Baywalk, a two-kilometre promenade on Manila Bay, famous for its golden-hour views. After sunset, make your way to Binondo Chinatown, the world's oldest Chinatown, filled with lively street markets and hole-in-the-wall eateries. It's loud, colourful, and the perfect introduction to the energy and spirit of the Philippines.

Philippine Airlines flights from Sydney (SYD) land at Terminal 2 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in Manila. From this same terminal, travellers can connect to some of the Philippines’ most popular destinations, all within under 2 hours.

  • Cebu – ~1h 35m

  • Boracay (via Caticlan) – ~1h

  • Siargao – ~1h 45m

  • Palawan (Puerto Princesa) – ~1h 20m

Cebu

Cebu: Queen City of the South

Cebu City, often called the “Queen City of the South,” is the Philippines’ oldest city and a fascinating blend of past and present. Here, you’ll find iconic landmarks such as Magellan’s Cross, dating back to the 1500s, and the Basilica del Santo Niño, one of the country’s most revered churches. Spanish-era forts and plazas sit alongside bustling markets, modern malls, and lively street food stalls.

Beyond the city lies a playground of natural wonders. For thrill-seekers, canyoneering at Kawasan Falls is a must, jumping, swimming, and scrambling through turquoise gorges before plunging into cascades. Wildlife lovers can head south to Oslob, where encounters with gentle whale sharks are a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And if you prefer something slower, the island’s coastline is dotted with laid-back beach towns and resorts where you can soak up the sun or explore hidden coves.

Siargao

Siargao: Surfer's Paradise

If your idea of a holiday is salt in your hair and sand between your toes, Siargao is your island. Known worldwide for the legendary Cloud 9 surf break, this tear-shaped island has become a mecca for surfers, adventure seekers, and nature lovers alike. But there’s much more to Siargao than waves. Picture turquoise lagoons, secret rock pools, palm-fringed roads, barefoot vibes and laid-back beach bars.

Spend the day hopping between Daku Island, Naked Island, and Guyam Island. Add cafe-hopping around General Luna, paddleboarding through mangroves or cliff-jumping into natural pools, and you’ll see why Siargao has quickly become one of the Philippines’ most talked-about destinations.

Palawan

Palawan: Nature's Finest

Palawan is where nature really shows off. The towering limestone cliffs of El Nido, the mirror-flat lagoons of Coron, and the UNESCO-listed Puerto Princesa Underground River make it a bucket-list destination for a reason.

Here, days are spent island-hopping, swimming in volcanic lakes, kayaking through crystal clear waters, snorkelling among WWII shipwrecks, or simply gazing out at a horizon that seems to have no end. It's remote, raw, and breathtaking, and the kind of place you’ll want to switch off, slow down, and savour every moment.

Boracay

Boracay: White Sands & Sunsets

Few beaches in the world are as instantly recognisable as Boracay's White Beach, a four-kilometre stretch of powdery sand that glows at sunset. The island's recent environmental refresh has made it cleaner and more sustainable, without losing its vibrant energy.

By day, take your pick from water sports, sailing, island-hopping, or lounging at a luxury resort with a cocktail in hand. By night, beachside dining and live music make it a place where the fun never really stops.

Travel Tips for Australians

Travel Tips for Australians

  • Currency: The Philippine Peso (PHP). Credit cards are accepted in cities, but carry cash for smaller islands and rural towns.

  • Language: English is widely spoken in tourist areas, with Filipino (Tagalog) the national language.

  • Visas: Australians can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Extensions are available through the Bureau of Immigration.

  • Time Zone: The Philippines is two hours behind Sydney during Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), and three hours behind when Sydney is on daylight saving time.

  • Transport: In cities, Grab (the local ride-hailing app) is the easiest way to get around safely and conveniently.

  • Weather: The Philippines is tropical, so expect warm, humid conditions year-round. Pack light, breathable clothing, and don't forget sunscreen and insect repellent for outdoor adventures.
