Sydney Airport has introduced improved Taxi Short Fare arrangements at the airport. Taxi networks and rideshare drivers will experience a number of benefits from the new system including:

Introduction of GPS technology operated out of Sydney Airport’s Landside Operations centre; New short fare boundaries (developed in consultation with the NSW Taxi Council and NSW Taxi Operator and Driver Association);

  • New dedicated short fare lane at T2/T3 for returning taxis
  • Time for drivers to return to Sydney Airport increased from 26 minutes to 40 minutes
  • More information for drivers with a driver facing screen at T2/T3 taxi holding bay exit
  • Note that the existing arrangement where taxis picking up short fares at T1 return to T2/T3 will remain unchanged. Taxis will use the new dedicated short fare lane at T2/T3, which will display taxi information on the new driver facing screen

To help us get the most of this approach, there are a few things you need to know:

  • You'll need to approach our licence plate cameras at a speed below 5km/h
  • You should maintain a three-metre gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you when approaching the camera
  • The licence plate camera works best when you have a reflective licence plate, which is clean and free from damage
  • If your licence plate is unable to be read by the camera, you won't be able to take advantage of the short fare system, and won't be provided access to the taxi rank as a short fare
