Frequently Asked Questions

Here's a list of answers to our most Frequently Asked Questions.

  • The Airport Services Centre located on Level 3 (Administration) at T1 International terminal
  • The Ambassadors information desk on Arrivals level at T2 Domestic terminal
  • The oversized luggage counter on Departures level at T3 Domestic terminal

At security screening and passport control this lets staff know that you may need more time and support through processes. Where possible, staff will facilitate you through the special assistance lanes. Note this lanyard does not give you fast track access through security or passport control.

If you haven't done so already, be sure to contact your airline and make them aware of any special assistance requirements that you may have before you travel.

What are the restrictions for powders liquids, aerosols and gels (PLAGs) in carry on baggage?

If you're travelling overseas, there are restrictions on the quantity of liquids, aerosols and gels and some powders you may carry onboard, including those bought from duty free. These restrictions apply to all passengers leaving on international flights, as well as those who are transiting and/or travelling on the domestic leg of an international flight within Australia. Certain exemptions apply for medicines, medical products, medical devices and baby products that you may need during the flight.

The Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs website provides more information about restrictions and exemptions.

Flights within Australia are not subject to restrictions on how much powder, liquid, aerosols and gels you can carry onboard. However, if you are travelling domestically, but departing from an international terminal, you are subject to powder, liquid, aerosol and gel restrictions.

I am pregnant, what options at security screening are available?

All body scanners in Australia use non-ionising millimetre-wave technology. This means they do not emit ionising radiation like that of x-rays. The low intensity waves and short duration of the scan means you are exposed to less energy than other common everyday devices such as mobile phones. The millimetre-waves are reflected off the surface of the skin and do not penetrate the body. There are no known health risks from undergoing a scan so travellers who have a medical condition or are pregnant should not be concerned.

Can I meet and greet at the gate at the International terminal?

Unfortunately, you may not proceed through security to meet any arriving or departing international passengers. Please say your goodbyes before passport control. You will only be able to meet arriving international passengers in the public arrivals hall, after they have completed the arrivals passport control processes.

Can I meet and greet at the Domestic terminal gate?

You are welcome to proceed through security screening to greet an arriving or departing domestic passenger, however, you will be subject to normal security screening procedures. You may move around freely in the general areas of the terminals after screening, but will not be able to continue past the boarding gate.

Can surrendered items be reclaimed after screening?

All items surrendered at the screening point must be disposed of by the screening authority. Security screening officers have the final say if there is any doubt about what items can be carried on board.

I am travelling internationally, what baby products can I take on board with me?

You are allowed to carry onboard a reasonable quantity of powder, liquid, aerosol or gel items for a baby or infant for international flights. Pack only what you need for the duration of a flight and any delays that may occur. There are no quantity restrictions for organic powders such as powdered baby formula.
